In March 2008, fifteen of Indonesia's most prestigious designers and eight high-profile Hong Kong designers took part in EcoChic Jakarta, proving how recycled chic is not only eco-friendly but eco-inspirational.
The fashion designers were asked to highlight how earth-friendly clothing could help to lessen the impact of climate change. Some designers used scrap fabric to create new dresses, drawing attention to the wastage incurred in the textile industry. Others used eco-friendly materials, such as corn rusks and pandanus leaves, to demonstrate the need for alternatives to the chemically intensive textiles often used in the fashion industry. A number of designers let their imaginations do the talking in the 'recycled chic' section where a wide range of wasted materials including microchips, beer cans, shoelaces, plastic banners and cling film, were transformed into stunning dresses.
